Doctor Who – The Daleks in Colour

The first Dalek story dazzlingly colourised and weaved into a 75-minute blockbuster…
Some of the most technically challenging shots I was allocated were in near complete darkness! Below, you can see a selection of scenes from the radiation room, the caves and the Dalek city wall.

Working in the dark

I was lucky enough not to have many scenes where you could clearly see what was going on. I somehow have a reputation for tackling the impossible and I don’t even look like Tom Cruise. Having worked on several challenging scenes on the unreleased Day of Armageddon colourisation, I guess I was the shoe-in for this one and my word, it wasn’t easy!

Although the full scene featuring the radiation room cuts away, you can enjoy a fully colourised version of the radiation room scene here. There were no colour references available for this scene and dotted around in the background is various 1960s scientific equipment for which I sampled colour with similar looking machines. You’d be hard pressed to notice as the scene is so dark! I opted for yellow for one of the more prominent pieces of equipment instead of opting for a rather too obvious pale Dalek blue.

This scene was very problematic to colourise due to the light from the front illuminating the actors being quite strong and the picture resolution being very low removing a lot of detail despite the miraculous work undertaken for the picture restoration. Keeping the colour consistent between fast blurry movements certainly kept me up until the early hours of the morning.

Something Who – Episode 85: The Daleks in Colour
The following excerpt is from Something Who
You know how when you’ve been waiting months for a new episode of Something Who and then 3 turn up close together?
On 23rd November 2023, Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary, the highlight on BBC TV was The Daleks in Colour – a 75 minute reimagining of the first Dalek story specially colourised to help bring the story to life for a new generation. And less than a week later I had the good fortune to chat with 3 of the team responsible for making it – Benjamin Cook, the Editor, Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist and Timothy K Brown, Colourisation Artist.
It’s a fun chat that goes into storytelling, why some of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved and how they were overcome and what it’s like to have your name in the same set of credits as William Hartnell.

Astounding work on the colourisation! The cave sequences in The Daleks looked incredible on BBC4.
